The Washington Capitals and Devils Backbone Brewing Company unveiled today a new can design for Capit-Ale, a brew that debuted in September. Fans were encouraged to submit designs of a beer can at https://www.dbbrewingcompany.com/capit-ale/.
Springfield, Va., native Cole Hogan won the contest to have his original design displayed on the can. Hogan’s Capit-Ale design features Washington D.C., monuments and buildings, the Capitals logo, the ALL CAPS phrasing and a hop cone worked into the architecture of the Capitol Building as a nod to the beer’s flavor.
Beginning in early 2020, 16 oz. cans featuring Hogan’s design will be available for purchase at Capital One Arena through the conclusion of the 2019-20 NHL season. The beer will also be available on draft in Capital One Arena and at select retail locations in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Hogan’s design was selected by Devils Backbone Brewing Company and the Washington Capitals, judged on the criteria of creativity, originality, and the representation of Devils Backbone Brewing Company and the Washington Capitals. In addition to having his artwork on the can, Hogan will receive tickets to a Capitals game and have his art hung in the Capital One Arena Devils Backbone Lounge.
This new can will replace Capit-Ale’s original can design, which currently features the Capitals mural installation at L’Enfant Plaza, designed by the Washington, D.C.-based artist collective BroCoLoco. The Capitals partnered with BroCoLoco and local artists to install murals across several neighbors in the Washington, D.C. region.
Capit-Ale IPA is brewed with Bravo, Centennial, and Hull Melon hops, and dry hopped with additional Centennial and Hull Melon. The brew has melon and citrus aromas with a hint of spice and a malt finish. Fans can find the beer on draft near them by using the DB Beer Finder at www.dbbrewingcompany.com/beers/#beer-finder.
