Time for Garth Snow to show the Fans and Ownership he’s willing to do whatever it takes to improve this team.
It’s been quite the start of the year for the New York Islanders. During the first two months of the season, the Islanders clearly exceeded expectations. They were the number 1 ranked offense throughout the league for some time and everyone was contributing. Not only was the first line putting up points every night, the Islanders were getting major contributions from their other forwards. Matthew Barzal was performing at an elite level with Andrew Ladd and Jordan Eberle playing alongside him. Brock Nelson was off to a hot start to the year (things have changed dramatically for him), and the fourth line was performing how they always do. Everything was going well for the Islanders offense until December hit. The team went through a long scoring drought and Special Teams have plummeted. After losing Kulemin for the remainder of the season, the Islanders have not been able to fix their Penalty Kill either. The beginning of the season for this Islanders forward group was fantastic. On the defense and goaltending side, not so much.
The goaltending has pretty much been bad since opening night. Jaro Halak is extremely inconsistent and Thomas Greiss just has not been able to find his game since opening night. On a nightly basis you just don’t know what you are going to get from these two guys. On the blueline, inexperience, fatigue, and injuries has certainly caught up with the team. Johnny Boychuk has missed significant time lately, Calvin DeHaan is most likely out for the remainder of the season, and this has forced Scott Mayfield and Adam Pelech to play more minutes each night than they should. Dennis Seidenberg is showing his age, and after a very impressive start to the year from Nick Leddy, he has been a -19 since the beginning of December.
It seems like that excellent start to the year has completely faded. The Islanders now just seem lifeless and nothing is going right for the team. It’s time for General Manager Garth Snow to fill these needs. The team is in desperate need for a top 4 defensemen, a penalty killer to replace Kulemin, and a CLEAR Number One Goalie!
The Islanders have several assets that they could move. Besides the fact this team still has an abundance of prospects, they have multiple first round picks this year and second round picks that they should part ways with. The time for drafting and developing first round picks needs to end. The window for the Islanders to win is now. Snow has not made a blockbuster at the deadline since the Ryan Smyth trade. Time to prove to the fans, the organization, and captain John Tavares that this team is finally serious about winning! Give John a reason to sign an 8-year extension.
If Garth does absolutely nothing (which is exactly what I expect), then you’ll be seeing John Tavares at Belmont in a few years,,,,,,in an opposing team’s uniform!
