The 5 Hole: Lost In The Desert

The Islanders (15-15-7) head down to Arizona to take on the struggling Coyotes (11-22-6) Saturday night in Glendale. The Coyotes celebrated Shane Doan’s 1500th game and 400th goal before the puck drop and this was also Johnny Boychuk’s 500th NHL game, so congrats to both. The first period was… not the most entertaining, we’ll say. Greiss had a series of action in front of the net making 4-5 remarkable saves in a matter of 15 seconds. Also Ladd took two penalties and the period ended tied at zero. Best part of the 1st period was during intermission we got to meet a little kid named “Thomas Hickey” so that was pretty cool. A similar looking 2nd period treats us with an Islanders goal with 4:25 left. Domingue gets caught out of the net and a Boychuk shot gets deflected by Quine in front and the Islanders are us 1-0 and that’s how the second period would end. In the third an Isles powerplay yields no shots but gives up a breakaway which was stopped by Greiss who had a very solid game but didn’t receive much help. Arizona cal-up Perlini stays hot and deflects a Murphy shot passed Greiss to tie the game at 1 with 5:55 left in the third. And for the second night in a row we go to overtime. Prince hits two posts in two consecutive 2on1’s and 34 seconds of powerplay time couldn’t’ get the job done as we head to a shootout. Clutter and Ladd can’t convert in the shootout and the Isles drop another tough one to a struggling team. 2-1 final.
