The 5 Hole: Monumental Win Against Washington

The Isles (13-14-6) host the Capitals (20-8-4) in a well attended Barclay’s Center on Tuesday night. A clutterbuck shot puts the Islanders up 8:02 into the first period. Shortly after a defensive breakdown led to Washington getting numerous chances before Williams finally buried it tying the game at 1. Yet 14:03 into the second period, a Hickey cross-crease finds Andrew Ladd who puts the Isles up 2-1 and has now scored in his last two games. The Caps answer early in the third after an Isles powerplay expires and Ovechkin is left alone in front as he buries a rebound. More back and forth action as no other than Andrew Ladd deflects a point shot. Isles up 3-2. Less than a minute later, newly engaged Anders Lee splits the defense and beats Holtby in alone putting the Isles up 4-2 now. “Holtby” chants echo from the crowd. The Islanders seem to be heating up. This is the third straight game they have scored 4 times. At 13:05, Washington comes into the zone and Andre Burakovsky puts one passed Halak cutting the deficit to one goal. With 5 minutes left, Seidenberg takes a slashing penalty which was successfully killed but right as it ends Hickey is called for a high stick behind the play with obviously he didn’t agree with but upon a second look it looks like a good call. That penalty is also killed and the Isles hang on to a 4-3 win and climb back to .500 on the first game back from the Holiday break.
