The Islanders (11-11-5) take on the Capitals who are 5th in the Metro with a record of 17-7-3. A scary sight early on as Cizikas appeared t0 get cut by a skate in the wrist area. He sprinted down the tunnel with a trainer and somehow returned only minutes later. Hickey tried to grab the puck out of the air, missed, and it hit him in the face. He seemed to be okay on the bench. Brock Nelson kicks off the scoring with a snipe over Holtby’s shoulder in the “toy department” (according to Butch).
The second period started with Brett Connolly directing a cross crease pass from Lars Eller off his skate and in. No kicking motion and the goal ended a 112 minute shutout streak against the Capitals. Butch told the Caps that “you should be able to hold on to your stick…c’mon you’re a grown man”. Caps score a powerplay goal that wasn’t Ovechkin. Kuznetsov circled the net, threw it in   front and Vrana beat Halak high. But a good shift leads to a Leddy point shot being tipped by Kulemin in front which ties the game at 2.
Butch absolutely destroys Seidenberg in one sentence claiming that a story from his time during Boston wasn’t true about breaking a teammates hand with a shot because “ohhh no no his shot isn’t hard enough to do that” and Seidenberg just quit hockey after Butch comes from the top rope to take him out.
Anyway, the start of the third period wasn’t exactly ideal. Niskanen scores his first goal in 45 games early in the period to put the Caps up 3-2. An untimely penalty with about 3 minutes left lead to another Niskanen goal now putting the Caps up 4-2 late in the third.  Tom Wilson was called for tripping with just under a minute left but it would not matter as the Isles drop 2 points to division rival Washington and fall back under .500 to 11-12-5.
Still in favor of making Islander games end after the second period btw.
