Is Nike an Anti-Christian Company?

Nike has fired Manny Pacquiao over his recent anti-gay / pro-Christian comments.

Nike has issued a statement saying, “We find Manny Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting and standing up for the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao.”

Yet Nike appears to be “discriminating” against Pacquiao as a born-again Christian vocalizing his beliefs which adhere to the teachings of the Bible, the question begs: Is Nike – which calls itself “an inclusive company” – discriminating against Christianity and the Bible? The hot point of Pacquiao’s comments were him saying in a recent interview that gay people who participate in the gay lifestyle are “worse than animals” as animals know better than to participate in homosexual relations.

Of course it’s a controversial and edgy statement from the beloved boxing champion but then again so are the similarly controversially antagonistic statements in the Jewish Talmud religious book regarding the animalistic nature of non-Jews or “goyim.”

Of course Nike has a history of aligning with “edgy” athletes from sports like football and basketball and baseball – consider that for one of my tennis books about “Marcelo Rios: The Man We Barely Knew” I interviewed a Nike executive who revealed this about how Nike selects it’s athletes to endorse:

“If (Andre) Agassi was going to be finished, when one of your star endorsers ends his career, you have to plan for that. You can’t bank on all the top athletes playing at the same level every year. We felt like Rios was ‘the guy.’ He was already endorsed by adidas, but he was ‘the guy.’ When we consider an athlete, we’re not looking at guys who are vanilla, just plain. We’re always looking for guys with attitude, of course, who can, at the end of the day, win Grand Slams. I love Tim Henman and Todd Martin but they weren’t the kind of athletes that we went after. Rios was. He fit our mold.”

So there you have it – Pacquiao’s recent religious statements – which are supported and substantiated by the Bible – have provoked Nike to fire or discriminate against Pacquiao because of his strict and devout religious beliefs and principles.

And so you have to wonder – consequently now are we to surmise that Nike is an anti-Christian, anti-Bible company?
