The prevailing thought after the Islanders 3-2 loss in Washington on Thursday night was that despite the disappointing finish, the team had played one of its better games of the year against elite competition. They owned possession, took a ton of shots, skated better and were more physical than in recent memory.
That effort coupled with a 5-3 win against Minnesota had Jack Capuano feeling optimistic about where his team was as they welcomed Johnny Boychuk back to the lineup. Unfortunately, all those good feelings went away quickly Saturday afternoon as the Islanders were blasted 5-1 in Detroit and are now out of a top 3 spot in the Metropolitan Division.
As always though, #IslesTwitter showed up. Here is the best from social media during Saturday’s game:
Everyone was super excited for the return of Johnny Boychuk, none more so than his baby brother Dave.
Guess who's back???? #Boychuk #Isles @NYIslanders https://t.co/jgjMK31Rvs

The rest of the league, not so much.

The Isles knew the game started at 2pm, right?

The possibility of missing the playoffs is starting to sink in and we all handle it in our unique way.
This is just pathetic. Honestly. I want to slug every last soul who said this team was a lock for 100 points in the chops. #isles

After Detroit took a 3-0 lead, the frustration started to overflow a bit.
This team is so goddamn flawed and is so held back by coaching that if they do make the playoffs the first round is going to be miserable.

These kind of stats will have an adverse effect on Halak’s Save Percentage for the foreseeable future.
Red Wings now have four goals on 13 shots vs. Islanders.

Hide your eyes from the standings for a few days
First time #isles out of top 3 in metro since I believe October…not a good scene

The only thing worse than trailing 4-0 after 2 periods, is having to wait a hour for the 3rd to start
Bolt got stuck under Zamboni blade. Cut hole in ice from blue line to crease on east end. #RedWings, Isles delayed. pic.twitter.com/y8D6VswSLC

The question we have been asking for years.
"Any of you guys know a winger by chance?" #Isles pic.twitter.com/htoA9KAkGh
