Ex-Islanders Defenseman Mathieu Schneider Elected to US Hockey Hall of Fame

Mathieu Schneider, the most well liked player (was competing with Kirk Muller) traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Islanders for Pierre Turgeon and Vladamir Malakhov in 1995 has been elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2015 .
Schneider, born in New York, NY played parts of two seasons with the Islanders. The offensively skilled defenseman scored 16 goals and added 44 assist in 78 games.
While he came to the Island in the very unpopular Turgeon trade, Schnieder was later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in one of the better trades in team history. Schenider was moved along with Wendel Clark and DJ Smith for a package that included future Islanders captain D Kenny Jonsson and the Maple Leaf’s 1st Round pick in the 1997 Draft. The Isles would take goaltender Roberto Luongo with the 4th Overall selection in that draft.
He won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993, helped the U.S. earn the inaugural World Cup of Hockey title in 1996 and is among the top five American defensemen in NHL history in nearly every statistical category.
Schneider also played for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, N.Y. Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, Vancouver Canucks and Phoenix Coyotes.
Schneider represented the U.S. in four international events, including the World Cup of Hockey in 1996. He also participated in two Olympics (1998, 2006) and the IIHF World Junior Championship (1988).
Chris Drury, Anegla Ruggiero and Ron DeGregorio are the other members of the 2015 class.
