Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin may put on a great fight on Saturday night but today’s press conference could not have been any more boring or bland. Neither fighter seemed capable of saying anything interesting other than the same old cliches about “big fight” and “belts.” It’s as if both fighters were afraid to say anything which might indicate… well, some things are better left unsaid.
But there were two sentences spoken by one of the combatants which did arouse curiosity. At the end of today’s very dull final press conference, Gennady Golovkin said this when asked by the event interviewer about what the fans can expect on Saturday night: “…I believe it’s not last fight for us. Maybe this is first fight. I believe I have second fight too.”
Why is Gennady Golovkin already talking about a rematch? Is he looking ahead past the first fight already? Shouldn’t he be talking about beating Canelo so bad for ducking him for two years that Canelo shouldn’t even want a rematch?
Hmmmmm…
