Greiss Reups For 3 Years

The Islanders have resigned Thomas Greiss to a new three-year extension worth about 10 million dollars.  The annual (cash) payout number is still unverified, but Greiss will have a 3.3-million-dollar cap hit starting next season.  This is a raise from his 1.5-million-dollar salary he had for the past two seasons.  In each of the past two seasons Greiss has come into the season as the backup but was able to make the starting job his.  Last year he played in 41 games and had a .925 save percentage and was in net when the Isles beat the Panthers in the playoffs.  This year he was the backup again to Halak.  By December he again surpassed Halak as the starter.  The Islanders have been a better team with Greiss in net with his 24-14-7 record along with a .928 save percentage.
Before coming to Brooklyn, Greiss was a journeyman backup goaltender starting his career in San Jose before stops in Phoenix and Pittsburgh.  He was originally signed to backup Halak for 2 years but has taken over the job in both seasons.  Now that Greiss has been given the opportunity to play as a starter, he has proven himself as a capable starting goalie in the NHL.
When comparing the Greiss contract the best place to look is Edmonton and Cam Talbot.  Talbot before the season agreed to a 3 year 12.5-million-dollar contract.  They have similar career numbers both played between 155 and 160 games.  Talbot has a .923 career save percentage, .919 with Edmonton, Greiss has a .919 career save percentage and a .926 with the Islanders.  This will not be a bad contract for the Islanders to deal with long term especially with their current cap situation.  Greiss will provide stability with the position for the foreseeable future.
