For The Record-Harlem Globetrotters Set Seven Guinness World Records® Records

Globetrotters-Logo-90The world famous Harlem Globetrotters began the day holding five official Guinness World Records® records. On Wednesday alone they set seven, including a record for most basketball three pointers made by a pair in one minute – held by NBA superstars Kevin Durant and Dirk Nowitzki – and the third world record set by Thunder Law in as many years.

The records were all set at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, home of the Phoenix Suns, in celebration of the 11th annual Guinness World Records Day.

Globetrotters stars Ant Atkinson and Cheese Chisholm drained 19 three pointers between them in one minute – alternating between made shots – to smash the record of 15 by Durant and Nowitzki.

Thunder Law added the longest basketball shot blindfolded – 69 feet 6 inches – to his other Guinness World Records® records for the longest basketball shot (109 feet 9 inches) and the farthest basketball shot made backwards (82 feet 2 inches).

“Being a part of this record-setting day with all of my teammates was incredible,” said Ant. “The Globetrotters have been setting the standard for amazing basketball feats for 90 years, and we are ready to show our wonderful fans more remarkable basketball and family entertainment throughout our 2016 World Tour.”

Here is a rundown of the other records set by the Globetrotters on Wednesday:

  • Big Easy Lofton – who earlier this year broke the record for the farthest basketball hook shot: 61 feet 4 inches – set a new mark for the farthest blindfolded basketball hook shot: 50 feet 3.5 inches.
  • Hammer Harrison established a new mark for the longest underhand basketball shot, an astounding 84 feet 8.5 inches.
  • Handles Franklin set a new standard for the farthest kneeling basketball shot made backwards: 60 feet 7.5 inches, which he hit on just his second attempt.
  • In true Globetrotters fashion, Scooter Christensen broke the record for the longest duration spinning a basketball on the nose: 7.7 seconds, obliterating the old mark of 5.2 seconds.
  • Zeus McClurkin set the mark for the most basketball slam dunks in one minute, with 15. Zeus could only dunk one ball at a time and was required to run across the free throw line before each attempt.

Celebrating 90 iconic years of providing smiles, sportsmanship and service to millions, the Globetrotters will tip off the North American leg of their 2016 World Tour on Dec. 26, and the team will play over 330 games in more than 260 cities in 48 U.S. states, eight Canadian provinces and Puerto Rico through April 2016.
