The 5 Hole: Return of Frans

Tonight played with our emotions. We’re not over him and we still have feelings for our boy. Fan favorite Frans Nielsen and the Red Wings (11-11-3) make the trip to Brooklyn for a Sunday night game against the Islanders (9-10-4). Tatar opened the game up with a breakaway that was turned aside by Halak. The Isles first shot resulted in a goal as Lee had an open net thanks to a sweet dish from Clutterbuck and buried it to put the Islanders up 1-0 early. Things got emotional quickly as during our first TV timeout, a video tribute to The Great Dane was displayed and he seemed to get a little choked up while giving a standing ovation. Green ties the score up at 1 off a nice pass from no other than Nielsen at 12:53. Green scored again with 6:35 left in the second and it was assisted by another former Islander, Thomas Vanek (of course) which put the Wings up 2-1. Clutterbuck gets taken down in front and scurries out of the way to avoid a Boychuk wrister that goes post and in which ties the game at 2 with 18:08 left in the third. Mike Green soon after throws one at the net which goes past Halak but the Islanders use a coaches challenge and review it for goalie interference. The call is overturned and things stay tied at 2 with just over 13 minutes left in the third.
If you give Capuano and his staff a compliment, they are good with the challenges.

Yet Zetterberg beautifully deflects a point shot with 6:54 left in the third to put Detroit up 3-2. No ex-Isles got a point on that goal so hey, at least we got that going for us, I guess. But with 4:21 left, Bailey finds the puck during a scramble in front and squeaks one in to tie the game for the third time. This would be the first time out of 8 that the Islanders were the ones to force an overtime.
We didn’t get to be on the other end of the signature backhand of Nielsen in the shootout because the Wings caught the Isles with a 3 on 2, 1:02 into overtime and Danny DeKeyser snipped one passed Halak to hand the Isles a deflating loss in Frans’ (1A) first return to Barclays.
But as always here’s the best of Isles Twitter from tonight…
