Puella Magi Madoka Magica VS Yuki Yuna Is A Hero: Part 1
This article is the first of three parts comparing Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Yuki Yuna, whose similarities are undoubtedly uncanny. The first two parts will be my opinion of the two series individually and the last will be a comparison of the similarities and differences.
Puella Magi Madoka is a show I finally allowed myself to watch after years of peers suggesting I watch it and hearing them rave about their favorite characters. I liked the art design of the witches and their world as it brought back nostalgia from when I was a tween watching Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales on a daily basis. I also found the concept of putting a touch of dark reality in a genre that’s known for it’s bunnies and rainbows very refreshing.
Puella Magi Madoka starts out typical but as it goes on and you learn more about the characters and their backgrounds it gets a bit crazy but not before a slight feeling of ‘hurry up and wait’ kicks in as you’re waiting for Madoka to finally transform and for the story to progress. The show also seemed to rush through some moments in order to fit in everything before the end where others just dragged out with back and forth arguments with justifications and monologues of explanation.
After all that, does Puella Magi Madoka live up to its hype? The costumes are cute and the characters are some what likeable, but I didn’t find myself too crazy about this anime. In fact, my leg kept drumming anxiously crying for the show to be over. I just wasn’t sucked in and I was more interested in going to sleep in the middle of the day than finishing the series. Does it mean it was bad? No. If I was a teenager, I probably would’ve lost my mind about everything Madoka, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea. However, there were a few moments that caught my attention…
Beware of spoilers in Puella Magi Madoka if you haven’t watched the 12 episode anime series.
For Puella Magi Madoka I must say the death of Mami shocked me. I thought someone would transform and come to the rescue in the knick of time, or bring her back to life because she was a good character many people weren’t ready to part with. The most obvious downfall was Sayaka’s death. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out she’d be left high and dry after her crush regained his abilities. Homura’s story arc had to be the most interesting in the entire series and Madoka’s sacrifice brought the series back to typical magical girl solution.
I dont want to give too much away about Puella Magi Madoka Magica, so consider this part I. I will follow up with part II soon.
