Gangsta Alex Benedetto Is Our WCW, Here’s The Reasons Why
ALEX BENEDETTO is a character from the smash anime/manga hit of 2015, Gangsta. This dystopian acid trip of a story includes some very memorable characters. In the city of Egastulum, “The Handymen,” are tough guys for hire who remain neutral among the city’s warring factions. You have Warwick Arcangelo, the gun-slinging playboy who is the brains behind ‘the handymen.’ Nicolas Brown is the brawn of the group. He is strong, agile, and fearless, so people look to him as a protector. Then there is late-comer to the handymen, Alex Benedetto. She’s a former prostitute that is saved from a life of servitude by Alex and Nicolas.
Alex Benedetto is a special case because she falls slightly outside of the normal anime tropes. Sure, she’s beautiful, but she has so much more going on underneath the surface. She brings heart to the duo by bringing out the softer side of Warwick and Nicolas. That is why Alex Benedetto is our woman crush Wednesday #WCW. She’s compassionate, talented, and a survivor. That deserves recognition.
Alex is not from the city of Egastulum, but an outsider taken there by force. As a teenager, a strange man promised her honest work there if she came with him to the city. She left her younger brother with the intention of returning with enough money to take care of them both. Unfortunately, Alex got caught up in sex trafficking and forced into prostitution. She was drugged on a consistent basis to keep her subservient. With all the drugs and abuse, Alex lost the memories of who she was before. She even forgot about her brother. Life in the city had become bleak. She had nothing in her life to look forward to, that is until, Warwick and Nicolas entered her life.
Once her pimp was gone, she had nowhere else to go. Due to their generosity, ‘the handymen’ duo accepted her into their business, and their home as a receptionist. Ever since then, Alex Benedetto has been under their protection, as she became a part of a tangled web of violence, betrayal, and lies. She isn’t a killer like Warwick and Nicolas, but a vital part of the Gansta Legacy.
You see the glory of Gangsta is the way it handled so many issues like disability, human trafficking, mental illness, prejudice and discrimination, and Alex is at the center of it all. We get a glimpse of how Alex Benedetto deals with PTSD. She has flashbacks of her pimp and the various sexual assaults she had to endure at the hands of strange men. The audience/reader sees her progression and how she works through her suffering by getting psychiatric help, and learning to cope. Through her healing, she begins to regain some of her memories, including those of her brother and she begins to search for him.
She is very caring to her friends and always wants to help. She could have just wallowed in her sorrow, but she stepped outside of her comfort zone to build trust with others, while keeping her wits about her. Alex is also a talented singer. She was hired by the city’s most popular nightclub, Bastard’s to perform on a nightly basis thanks to Warwick.
As you can see, Alex is not your typical one-dimensional beauty, but she adds heart and soul to this violent and often depressing anime. It is truly a shame that Gangsta has been canceled due to budget constraints. There is still so much to develop, and more to learn, not just about Alex, but everyone. I hope we see a resurgence of the anime in the near future. I need and want more!
