Top Black and Brown Characters in Japanese Anime Part II

Written By Ni Kara Fury

Anime is a popular genre of film loved by people worldwide. Most Anime films and shows revolve around the strict characterization of Japanese anime characters, equipped with white skin, and big round eyes. But where is the love for the people of color of Japanese anime? Black and Brown characters do appear in anime, but not as often as they should. However, things are progressing, and you’re seeing a lot more diversity in Anime than ever before. This is a continuation of Valerie Complex’s article Top Black and Brown Characters in Japanese Anime Part 1. I am Ni Kara Fury and these are my 4 favorite Black/Brown characters that I love in Japanese Anime/Manga.

  1. Agil – Sword Art Online

Although Agil is not a main character in SAO, he is important to the storyline. Agil is one of the first people to oppose Kibaou saying the Beta testers were not to blame. That they helped and provided free information to those who needed help with Argo’s Strategy Guide First Floor Boss Edition. He aided main character Kirito by giving him a place to stay. He helped player’s clear floors and also helped lead a party in the Boss Fight with no casualties. He was always there for Kirito and Asuna when they needed him. He was someone that you could always rely on and definitely a positive force in this show.

  1. Kaname Tosen – Bleach

This character is brainy and tough. He has a tragic past like many characters yet he chooses to “Take the path with the least bloodshed”. He is blind yet his handicap is actually his greatest strength. His other senses are so heightened that he can sense danger miles before it happens and is a very skilled tactician. All of that coupled with the fact that he is one of the most intelligent characters in the Bleach Universe makes me love him even more. We need more smart and skilled positive Black/Brown characters like this in Manga/Anime.

  1. Shinobu (Scarlet Jacobs) – No More Heroes

This video game turned anime character is one of my personal favorites. Shinobu is an 18 year old assassin with an ax to grind. She is the youngest confirmed member of the United Assassins Association and a High School student on the hunt for her Father’s killer. She is very skilled and does anything to conceal her identity including kill fellow classmates. This may not be her most positive attribute but this character is a force to be reckoned with. The great part is she is In an important lead role as opposed to being a side character.

  1. Yoruichi Shihoin- Bleach

Bleach, Bleach Anime, Sword Art Online, No More Heros, Anime, Black and Brown

Yoruichi is a cunning and intelligent character. She holds intimate knowledge of Soul Society and their inner workings, and was the former leader of the Onmitsukido, and, the Second Division’s Captain. She is of noble birth but you wouldn’t know it because she acts differently than most noble’s. She is a very playful and fun personality. She does crazy things like that time she changed in front of Ichingo just to see his reaction to her body and then teased him about it. She is fun character but also one with great wisdom and courage. Definitely a strong Black/Brown Washi I can stand behind.

All of these characters bring something different and amazing to their perspective shows. I am excited to see how Black/Brown characters progress in Japanese Anime/Manga as it becomes more recognized. Michiko broke the mold, but there still aren’t as many dark skinned characters in a main roles. As Black woman would love to see characters that I can relate to physically as well as emotionally. I think that is what most Anime/Manga fans want to see. More positive and strong characters of all shapes, sizes, races and genders etc… Heroes that reflect all of us not just some.
