What The Anime Fandom Means to Me
By Brie Parr
I would like to introduce myself and explain why anime fandom and its related hobbies are such an important part of life. My name is Brie, and I have always been an artist who never knew what to do with my talents. That is, until my very persuasive friends introduced me to anime when I was in high school. I fell in love with the genre and I wanted so badly to express that love. What better way than to draw my favorite anime characters!
It took time and a lot of practice, but I was finally happy with my drawing ability. Next, I wanted to do something more with my love of anime, and thus I discovered cosplay. Dressing up for Halloween was always so much fun. I was excited to hear there are people who do it all year round! Again, it took hard work and dedication, but soon I was making costumes for my friends and I.
Finally, one of my best friends showed me how to make an AMV (anime music video) and I have been in love with them ever since. Anime gave me the muse I needed to explore new forms of art as well as developing my existing drawing skills.
Why all this talk about my passion? Because this applies to a lot of you, too. Many anime fans partake in making fanart, cosplays, AMVs, and even fanfictions. This is because people in the anime fandom love the genre like I do. Anime inspires creativity in so many people. Creativity that might have been locked away otherwise. This inspiration can lead anime fans to learn valuable skills such as sewing, professional and creative writing, basic computer skills, and drawing and crafting skills. Even if a fan doesn’t take part in creating, they take part in enjoying the creations: appreciating the fanart or cosplays, watching the AMVs, reading the fanfiction, and so much more. Everyone in the anime community has something to gain from the genre, whether it be friendship, appreciation, or simply happiness. That is why it is such an important part of our lives.
So what does anime mean to you? Maybe it has helped you through a hard time in your life, or maybe you don’t have anything else to watch. Whatever the reason, if anime brings you happiness, then keep on watching!
