Why Are Yaoi And Yuri Characters Always Separated?

Yaoi, Yuri, Anime
(c) Love Stage

Let me clarify that I will only be addressing anime that are considered a cannon yaoi or yuri series, but I have noticed a trend going on as someone who watches both yuri and yaoi anime.  Why is it that these shows rarely feature the opposite gender? For example, Yaoi anime Love Stage. The anime is about an awkward mangaka, Izumi Sena, who can’t draw.  He comes from a family of successful individuals who want him to go into the show business. The only female character that appears in this anime is a fictional magical girl that Izumi is obsessed with.

Yaoi, yuri, anime
(c) Sasameki Koto

Then there is Sasameki Koto.  A yuri anime about Sumika Murasame who is in love with her best friend Ushio Kazama. The only problem is that Ushioonly likes small girls and Sumika is tall.  The only male character is a crossdresser, who Ushio likes thinking he is a girl. When a character of the opposite gender does show up it’s usually to be a love rival or an ex-lover. Which is strange and makes the story odd in various ways. The only anime that broke this trope is a yaoi anime called Loveless, which shows the main characters interact with another lesbian couple.

As someone who is a part of the LGBTQIA community, this has been bugging me. I honestly expect more interaction between different types of LGBTQIA members. Do anime creators have this weird notion that lesbians and gays don’t hang out or get along? I think an anime that includes both gay and lesbian characters as main characters would make a fantastic story, and be more realistic. They would understand on another and even compare their struggles. Sounds like a wonderful heartfelt anime series waiting to happen. Maybe we will see more of these pairings in the future? One can only hope!
