Yoruichi Shihouin Is My Spirit Animal

Cosplay, Bleach Manga, Anime Girls
Yoruichi San (c) Bleach

Long Beach native, Yoruichi Infinity has been in the cosplay game for three years now. I first saw her at Sac-Anime Summer 2015, where she slayed in her Poison (Final Fight & Street Fighter) cosplay. From there, she has joined forces with cosplay deviants, and has become one of the site’s premiere models. Anime Complexium had the opportunity to chat with Yoruichi about her cosplay inspiration, favorite cosplays, and upcoming con appearances.

Cosplay Girls, Anime Girls, Superman ComicsWho Or What Inspired You To Cosplay?
That’s a good question. I went to the Anime Expo in 2011. It was my first time attending, and my first big con. My boyfriend at the time paid for my badge. It was the best experience of my life! I didn’t know too much about voice actors or pro-cosplayers, so learning all that at AX made me want to pursue cosplay.

In your three years as a cosplayer, how many cosplays have you accomplished so far?
My VERY first cosplay was Yoruichi Shihouin’s Stealth Force Form from the show Bleach. I got the costume as a Christmas gift. Sadly, it doesn’t fit me anymore. However, I still have it. Then I did a Bikini version of the same character. The bikini was black with black and white Houmonka. It took me 5 hours to draw out. It’s currently on my wall of retirement because I let voice actress, Wendee Lee, sign it to sort of honor her. I have plans to remake the bikini, Street Fighter, Final Fight, Cosplay Girls, Sex Animeand every other version of Yoruichi I can. I consider that character my spirit animal. Next was Kiba from Wolf’s Rain. No one knew who that was which is shocking to me.  I have plans to redo that one as well.  After that, my next cosplay was a Rule 63 Clark Kent from DC Universe in his usual Daily Planet attire. I had fun doing that cosplay and will gladly do it again. My most recent cosplay is Poison. She’s an absolute badass! I also shot her as my debut photo set for Cosplay Deviants. Currently, I am working on Alex Benedetto from “Gangsta” is almost done and she’ll be shot next for CD.

Of all the cosplays you’ve done, which one would you say is your favorite?
So far, Yoruichi Shihouin and Poison. I really would love to gender bend Mugen from Samurai Champloo. He’s my all time favorite, and I love Steve Blum’s work. I’m glad he got the role of Mugen. It just still hurts my heart that there will never be a second season for that show. There are so many things that still need to be answered!

What costumes have provided the biggest challenge and rewards so far and why?
None yet. However, the hardest thing has been styling wigs…. Ugh! A pain! The brushing, straightening, detangling…. It’s horrible!

yoruichi 2Do you get to travel the country to different conventions? Where can your fans expect to see you next?
I haven’t done any traveling to any other cons but I would like to. I’ve gone to conventions in my area area but hopefully I will be able to travel next year. Be on the look out for me at any CosplayDeviants events. I know for sure I’ll  be attending SacAnime Winter 2016! I may attend Anime Los Angeles (ALA), 2016, but that’s still up in the air.

What is the best advice you would give someone new to cosplaying?
Have fun with it! Don’t let some jackass ruin your fun because it’s not 100% like the character. Put you’re own twist to it if you want. Also, NEVER let a photographer force you to do something you do not want to do. If you know something isn’t right, walk away. Also, have a friend be with you during shoots. Out of cosplay or in cosplay. Also, don’t be afraid to ask friends for help. Have a sewing slumber party. Teach each other stuff and also look up tutorials on YouTube!
