Major Motokusangi is back and ready to tear up the screen with the new Ghost In the Shell (GitS) anime film. Production I.G. has designed a gorgeous film, and brought back some familiar faces.  The film seems to be based on the newest Ghost In The Shell: Arise (OVA) episodes. Here is a small synopsis of what the Arise is about:

In 2027, this prequel set in the year after the fourth World War, cyborg and hacker Motoko Kusanagi finds herself wrapped up in the investigation of a devastating bombing. But she’s not the only one looking for answers—as she delves deeper into the mystery of who is behind the attack.  She is a highly skilled agent of the military that meets Daisuke Aramaki, former soldier who is currently the chief of Public Security Section 9. Their encounter sparks the assembly of an elite new unit within Section 9, a specialized team unlike any before.

I recommend watching the first five episodes of this series  before watching this film. Ghost Pain, Ghost Whisperer, Ghost Tears, Ghost Stands Alone, and Pyrophoric Cult are the featured episode titles. The difficult thing about the series is that it assumes you already know what’s going on. If you have not watched Ghost In The Shell, I recommend at least starting with the film from 1995. This is to get an understanding of what you are viewing. The content can some times be confusing to understand so it is best to have a foundation.

Either way, Motoko Kusanagi is one of the best, most powerful female protagonist in anime history. Its best to get to know who she is.  The film is set to hit theaters for a limited time and limited release in November.
